IAN Paediatric Neurology Subsection

In recent years, the subspecialty of Paediatric Neurology has shown tremendous progress in both diagnostic and management techniques, especially with the recent surge in the field of genetics and targeted therapies in many early onset developmental, epileptic and neuromuscular disorders. Paediatric neurology subsection was formally launched in 2017 at the IANCON, Chennai to cater to the academic aspirations of the growing number of subspecialists in the country and to bring them under the umbrella of Indian Academy of Neurology.

Mission: The subsection is planned to serve as an academic platform to impart knowledge and expertise in the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders in children.  It will also strive to enhance clinical research in the subspecialty by imparting training, by encouraging the establishment of research consortiums and multicentric collaborations and fostering interactions with international research groups

Activities:

Paediatric Neurology Master class - 2019

The Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN), Paediatric Neurology subsection conducted its first academic event in the form of a Master Class in Paediatric Neurology on April 5 -6 , 2019 at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Tamil Nadu . The event was targeted mainly for the post graduates in Neurology as currently, most childhood neurological disorders, in the country are attended to by Paediatricians and adult neurologists. The response was overwhelming with nearly 200 delegates, comprising paediatricians, neurologists and post graduates in these fields.  The academic sessions were robust and very interactive with two international and 21 national faculty. Faculty included Paediatric Neurologists from all major institutes and from related specialties. The two day event ended with a well conducted quiz. The inaugural function was attended by the director, principal and medical superintendent of CMC, along with Dr. Sanjeev Thomas, past president of the IAN, Dr. Vrajesh Udani (Mumbai) and Dr. K P Vinayan (Kochi), chairperson and convenor of the Paediatric Neurology subsection and Dr. Chandran Gnanamuthu and Dr. Vivek Joseph, former and current head of the Department of Neurological Sciences. The subsection sincerely hopes this will set the trend for more to get interested in the field of Paediatric Neurology to  offer the best available services.

 

 

Paediatric Neurology virtual master class 2020

In view of the prevailing pandemic, the  second Paediatric Neurology masterclass 2020, which was planned to be held in Chandigarh in April  first week had to be called off  and The subsection organized    an international masterclass on the virtual platform in the second week end of July. The invited faculty included many well known experts in the field including Prof. Ingrid Tein (Former President, ICNA) , Prof. Haluk Topaloglu ( Turkey) , Prof. Yokitoshi Takahashi ( Japan), Prof.Laksmi Nagarajan  , Prof .Bindu Sankran( Australia ) , Prof Rajesh Nair  ( Canada). They were supported by senior Indian faculty. Prof. Pramod Pal (President, IAN) formally inaugurated the program in the presence of Prof. Gagandeep Singh. The program was a huge academic success with more than 400  participants from India as well as neighbouring countries .

Congratulations to Dr. Arushi Gahlot Saini, Assistant  Professor  of Paediatric Neurology, PGI, Chandigarh for winning the  IAN research grant 2020 for  the project titled ‘A Multicentric Cross-sectional Study of Leukodystrophies in India. The project envisages collection of clinical, radiological and genetic data on genetically-proven leukodystrophies seen at multiple centres across India for understanding the genetic landscape of  childhood leukodystrophies  in India. The subsection would like to   support more of such   national collaborative efforts to generate high quality  clinical  research data  on other paediatric  neurological disorders  from our country.
