Epilepsy

Mission statement

People living with epilepsy constitute a huge burden on health care in India. There are around 10 million people with epilepsy, of which about 3 million are drug resistant and another 1 million are potential candidates for epilepsy surgery. Across the nation there are about 38 centres both in public and private sectors catering to comprehensive epilepsy care which includes various epilepsy surgeries and other non-pharmacologic measures (ketogenic diet, VNS etc.). Despite these, there is a huge gap in both medical care as well as surgical intervention for epilepsy.

IAN subsection of Epilepsy will serve to provide a common platform for professionals across the country to raise awareness regarding detections, multi-modal evaluation, optimal medical management, non-invasive and invasive surgical work up and appropriate surgical interventions for people with epilepsy. It will also promote exchange of scientific and medical data and research amongst clinicians for better understanding and management of epilepsy. It will also be helpful to patients and relatives to get reliable and complete information about their illness.

It ventures to bridge the treatment gap and spread the knowledge and skills involved in comprehensive care of epilepsy. It serves to provide a channel to update with evolving concepts in this field.

Aims and objectives:

  • The subsection will work towards evolving common guidelines towards diagnosis and treatment of Epilepsy including refractory epilepsies and propose unified management strategies for Physicians and Neurologists.
